Envisioning a Mass Cycling Future

An openly available bicycle trajectory dataset & a mass cycling traffic flow simulation tool

Crossing in Zurich

About BikeZ

Cycling plays a key role in building sustainable and vibrant cities

However, it is still seen by transportation experts and users as a complementary mode to cars. There is limited understanding of how mass cycling impacts traffic efficienty and transport operations. BikeZ aims to promote cycling as a primary choice for short and medium travel distances.

To gain in-depth insights into cycling behavior and mass bicycle flow dynamics, bicycle trajectory data were collected by conducting drone experiments. A microscopic simulation tool was also developed to enable the quantification of the impact of mass cycling on congestion, emissions and energy consumption.
